Time: Sundays 11:30am -12:30pm

Eugene Peterson

Like last year (2020), our regular Sunday school curriculum will be interrupted by a special lecture series during this summer term (June – August). This year, we will be learning together as a community at the feet of the late Professor Eugene Peterson. The title of this 12-week course is “Tell It Slant: Parables as Spiritual Direction.” The course will begin on June 6.
Eugene Peterson was Professor Emeritus of Spiritual Theology at Regent College. He has written numerous books in the areas of pastoral theology and spiritual theology.

Course Description
As we become habituated in sin, we develop callous defenses against God’s grace. To set us free from our slavery, God is out to penetrate our defenses. Sometimes, He does this by direct confrontation. But other times, “indirection” is deployed to slip past our defenses “on the slant.” It was actually a favorite method of Jesus, His parables show him at work. By examining His parables in the Gospel of Luke we will train ourselves in discerning both the spiritual defences we have built up against grace and the method of “indirection” Jesus uses to get through to us.
