About the History of the Church
The Vancouver Chinese Evangelical Free Church (VCEFC) was started in 1975 in answer
to prayers and support of former members of the Hong Kong Evangelical Free Churches.
The first Chinese Speaking Sunday (CSC) worship was held on March 2, 1975 at the present
location. VCEFC was accepted as a member church by the Evangelical Free Church of
Canada in November 1975.
The English Speaking Congregation (ESC) of the Church started their first Sunday worship
in fall of 1978. Children of CSC members composed the initial membership of the ESC.
Today the ESC has grown to an average Sunday worship average attendance of 156 members
and Sunday School participation of over 220 ranging from preschoolers to young adults.
Over the past 24 years, the Church has planted three daughter churches in the suburbs
of Richmond, Burnaby and Port Coquitlam.
About the Current Demographics of the Church
Pastor Edward Lee is the Associate Pastor to the Chinese Speaking Congregation assisted
by Mrs. Wai-Mui Wong and Mrs. Rebecca Yip. In addition to the three pastoral staff,
the church also employs a church clerk.
The Church community comprises about 500 adults and 175 children, of which 280 are
church members. The majority of the parishioners participate in the core activities
of either the CSC or ESC. In 1998, the Church underwent a major revision of its by-laws
and governing structure. One result of those changes is that, in addition to the Church
Deacon Board, there are the elected members of the two Congregation Committees (ESC
and CSC) that will better facilitate the different ministries of the two congregations.
About the Future of the Church Needs
Church expansion efforts are ongoing to meet the needs of a growing membership. Plans
for consideration include acquiring a new property.
About Greater Vancouver
The Greater Vancouver region is located at the southwest corner of the British Columbia
mainland. Greater Vancouver's setting, combined with its situation as the key coastal
port for Western Canada and its history, results in a diverse mix of large and small
ethnic communities. The region's total population of 1.9 million people (238 thousand
Chinese) is centered on the City of Vancouver on the Burrard Peninsula.
